Gangster Christian // Christian Music

I'd like to share with you a committment I have made over the past 6 months or so.

I only listen to music that glorifies God.

Eep. You may call me "stuffy" you may say what you want, but it has truly changed things in my life. No, I'm not up on the latest gangster slang - and I heard about "Call me Maybe" while watching the Olympics. Apparently the swim team did not write that song. I still don't really know what YOLO is, but I see it pasted all over pictures on facebook.

I'll be honest. My hunk of junk car used to only pick up a few stations - the local Christian station was one of them. Sometimes the music was cheesy, and sometimes it was muffled by static, but I did not change it to the rap station.

Now, don't get me wrong. I love rap music. Yes, you read that right. I love it.... and I can hang in there with the greatest old school rap songs. I love hip hop music and dance. This one time, I even got to learn a dance from Twitch when I was in college.

BUT those lyrics do not glorify God.
They are not pure.

Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable—if there is any moral excellence and if there is any praise—dwell on these things
Philippians 4:8
Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

Since I've made the commitment to listen exclusively to Christian music, things are different. Things that I used to spout off and say, well that doesn't happen as much anymore. I don't listen to music that degrades women, or talks about Red Solo Cups. My music isn't infiltrated with alcohol and sinful living. I'm no longer exposed to that on a daily basis. In fact, when riding with others - I feel filthy when listening to secular music.

Let me confess something to you. I have a dirty mouth. Correction - I had a dirty mouth. Once I made the commitment to Christian music, this thorn was much easier to remove from my side. I never knew the impact that secular music had on me. I wasn't bad. I didn't go out and "Party like a Rock-star " I just sung about it in my car. But I would use profanity. Daily. Multiple times daily. Since making the switch, I no longer struggle with this sin daily. Yes, sometimes I get scared, or mad, and drop a 4 letter word, but it's nothing like I used to. Those chains are broken, and I am no longer in bondage to bad language habits. Glory to God, amen!?!

I encourage you to make a commitment to glorifying God with what you listen to. Just try it for 30 days. Your life will be changed, I promise.

{Note: I have discovered a few Christian rappers that I turn to when I feel the need to be a gangster.}

The Lord used this song to speak to me about my current struggles, and I believe he can speak to you through music as well!

What a great post! I am so with you on this topic; what you put into your brain (books, music, movies etc) truly impacts not only what your mind lingers on, but also what comes out in your words and actions. Be blessed!

It IS amazing the difference it can make when you monitor what you put in your mind. I'm glad you wrote this because I needed this challenge to get back to only listening to God-glorifying music. I did really good for a long time, but have gotten away from it some. I've also recently discovered Christian rap. I also try to monitor what I watch. It wasn't easy to begin with, but now (like you said) I feel wrong when I listen to or watch something "bad."

I know exactly what you mean!! It truly makes me squirm sometimes to listen to secular music. Have you heard of LeCrae? He has an amazing testimony and I really really really like his song "Dont Waste Your Life"... I think that's what its called. All I listen to nowadays is the river and rick and bubba and all I watch is the duggars and cooking shows.. I mean afterall, we have little eyes and ears to protect, let alone our own :)

I agree, the music you listen to can change you. It can control your mood. I think that the lyrics to most of the christian songs are straight from scripture and when you get a song in your head, your repeating God's word over and over.

Well done Megan. We made this lifestyle change many yrs ago. 17+ yrs. these days we can very occasionally listen to a clean and decent worldly song but that really is rare. There is a HUGE range of good Godly music available. Praying His richest blessings in you and your family as you continue to grow in Him. I love that Philippians scripture.
